Healthcare Leadership Strategies for a Better Future
Part 9 – Electrical and Telecommunications (Tele-Data) Systems
Two decades ago, when the 2003 SARS pandemic rattled the planet some areas of the world, such as Canada, saw higher rates of safety over others. With the current COVID-19 pandemic and the 2003 SARS pandemic being so similar in nature, JPT has taken a look at proven safety measures that previously benefitted these Healthcare Facilities during the 2003 SARS pandemic. Specifically, we are going to dive into Healthcare Leadership strategies for a better future concerning electrical and telecommunication systems.
- Strategic Master Planning efforts should be made regarding flexible, innovative and integrated building systems.
- Network hardware, software, electrical systems, data center cooling systems and the resiliency of telecommunication service providers should be evaluated.
- All staff should have remote access to the health system’s tele-data software and servers. Staff that are able to work from home should do so.
- All face-to face contact with another person should be minimized regardless if they are a staff member, patient or guest.
- Using telemedicine for patient appointments; encouraging the use of apps for patient registration; and communicating with patients through nurse call and tele-data systems for meals, bed checks, and other needs are all ways to reduce contact between people.
- As for patients who are physically in a healthcare facility, use cameras for routine monitoring of patients and enter that patients room only when necessary.
- Make sure to disable kiosk use and implement hands-free doors wherever possible.
Please check out the downloadable materials below that go along with JPT’s series titled “From SARS CoV-1 2003 to SARS CoV-2 2019: Healthcare Leadership Strategy for a Better Future”.
- The first downloadable item, which is this article’s feature, “Electrical & Tele-Data System Assessment”, contains information to help facility leaders to gain control of their electrical systems and telehealth in order to contain the virus in their facility.
- The second downloadable item is JPT’s Executive Guide that contains the entire series of “From SARS CoV-1 2003 to SARS CoV-2 2019”. The detailed Executive Guide contains information on many aspects of facility maintenance to help contain the COVID-19 virus and many other pathogens transmitted through the respiratory system. This information helps to reduce the transmission of highly contagious diseases within a building, particularly hospitals and other medical facilities but this guide could be used as a safety measure for all types of commercial buildings.
