Multi-Phased Construction

Project Quick Facts

Services Provided: Architecture, MEP Engineering & Consulting

Size: 25,000 SF

Completion Date: Currently Under Design & Construction

This Central Western PA hospital is undergoing a major Emergency Department (ED) renovation in addition to Master Planning updates. Along with the renovation of the ED, this project also includes a lab relocation, women’s center, diagnostic imaging and a new outpatient entrance and registration addition.

The overall project area is approximately 25,000 SF. The new Emergency Department addition is 9,512 SF; the Lab is 1,969 SF plus 1,182 SF new addition; Diagnostic Imaging is 6,450 SF; new Women’s Center is 2,800 SF; and the new Outpatient Entrance and Registration addition is 3,050 SF.

The project will include phased construction and Infection Control containment zones to maintain hospital operations. In general, the initial phasing plan includes:

  • Phase 1: Creation of additional parking capacity at the perimeter of the hospital campus near the main hospital entrance and near the Medical Arts entrance. This parking will off-set the loss of parking due to the new Emergency Department addition.
  • Phase 2: Creation of the Mobile/Transportable Medical Unit/Trailer location. This location will encompass a new level concrete surface and new utility services to support the unit. The identified location is the current Facilities trailer location at the rear of the hospital. The primary use will be for the MRI mobile unit while construction is on-going for the ED and Diagnostic. Imaging components. This will become the permanent mobile pad location.
  • Phase 3: The demolition of the current semi-permanent MRI location. The structural infill of this area for permanent construction and the construction of the new Emergency Department. New ambulance and drive-in entrances and dedicated parking will be completed during this phase. The new ED will be occupied during this phase and the current ED area will be vacated. Minor phased construction will be necessary to connect the new ED to current Lab and Diagnostic Imaging
  • Phase 4: Construction of the new Outpatient Entrance, Lab and Women’s Center. Patient traffic during this phase will be directed to use the current main hospital entrance during construction. The new Lab will be occupied during this phase and the current lab space will be vacated. Minor phased construction will be necessary to connect the new ED to the new Lab and current Diagnostic Imaging.
  • Phase 5: Reconfiguration will occur to accommodate the new MRI and relocated CT scanner. Sub-phasing coordination will be necessary for the CT relocation into its permanent location. Minor phased construction will be necessary to connect the ED to the new MRI and CT locations when occupied.
  • Phase 6: Creation of the north-south cross-corridor connection and Ultrasound room will occur. Part of this component may be combined with Phase 4.
  • Phase 7: Reconfiguration of the X-ray, reception, dress, office and lounge areas. This phase will relocate the X-ray rooms and create a centralized Tech Work area, patient dressing and sub-waiting, new Ultrasound and Inpatient holding bays.
